Florence: Birthplace of the Renaissance

Florence has so much to offer. We only had 3 short days in this wonderful city.  Much of the antiquities are concentrated within walking distance. The Duomo or  Dome was built in the 1200's. The workman left the dome portion unfinished as the technology to build such a structure was not available. A few years later and the Italians began to build domes, this is perhaps the largest example.

Florence is also in the heart of Tuscany.  Wine county! Olive County! Simply fantastic meals.  We had many delicious meals but the one that stands out the most clearly was a dish I ordered for lunch at a restaurant called Messere. I ordered a creamed cauliflower with truffles. It was outstanding! This place had about 8 tables and served the most excellent meals. Later we returned for a memorable dinner.

Florence is also home to many of Michelangelo's sculptures, most importantly David, a 14 foot incredible work of art. All carved from one large stone.  A marvel to behold, as the detail and workmanship cannot be duplicated today.
