The Trip We Almost Didn't Survive

Back to Tree and PD's Home Page
Overall, PD and I had a really fabulous time in Mexico.  There was one rather horrendous incident, as you can see in the picture....

We used my Northwest Airlines frequent flier miles to fly into Mexico City.  We decided to backpack from Mexico City to Belize.  (Actually, because of our bus accident, we never made it to Belize).  But, despite having a little bit shorter trip, we still had a wonderful time.  Seeing the pyramids was really incredible.

Mexico City - Hotel Isabel.

We left Oaxaca on a night bus for Villahermosa on Monday night. The bus trip was to take about 12 or 13 hours, and we settled down to try to get some sleep. Around 5 am or so (after we had stopped for a half hour break around 4 a.m.) we had a pretty serious accident. The bus skidded off the road, and then rolled 3 times down a small hill. The bus landed on its side, and we were thrown around the bus quite a bit. We were able to break out of the front windshield and crawl up the hill to the road. Fortunately, PD and I were not hurt badly. He had a really stiff shoulder and I had a massive lump on the side of my head. I got to wear a neck brace (very attractive and cool) for a bit of the remainder of the trip.

After our harrowing bus accident, we decided to stay in the lap of luxury for a few nights - The Royal Sands. Yes, that is a swim-up bar!

Yes, it is a blatant advertisement for Pepsi...
